Western Sydney International Airport

Mr GREG WARREN (Campbelltown) (13:25): I begin by thanking my good friend the member for Camden for bringing this motion before the House so that we can again talk about the third largest economy in Australia and the fastest growing area in New South Wales, if not Australia: Greater Western Sydney, which includes Western and south-west Sydney, and the kingdom of Macarthur, which includes Camden, Campbelltown and Liverpool.

I acknowledge enduring passion of the member for Oatley. If only all members opposite had had the same level of passion for western and south-west Sydney during their more than a decade in government, perhaps we would not be having this debate today. Regarding infrastructure in western and south‑west Sydney, members on this side of the House know how important the M12 and Western Sydney airport are as engines for growth, investment and jobs that the people of western and south-west Sydney not only need but also deserve. Only now, with Labor in government at both the State and Federal level, is the area getting the attention it deserves.

During their time in government, Liberal Party members would find their way out of their cushy little suburbs—wherever they may be—in the east and the north of the city for a photo opportunity and a cupcake at the airport. They would cut a ribbon and off they would go. They would even need GPS to get back home because they did not know where western and south-west Sydney were. What a worthy investment! There are copious housing developments in western and south-west Sydney without adequate investment in infrastructure. The previous Government also oversaw the privatisation of motorways—meaning more tolls—poles and wires, and hospitals. It also sold off the Land Titles Office in a one-hit sell-off that put the New South Wales economy into a comfortable position for about five minutes, as I think the Premier said.

Mrs Tanya Davies: Point of order—

TEMPORARY SPEAKER (Mr Clayton Barr): The Clerk will stop the clock.

Mrs Tanya Davies: The diatribe from the member about the various actions of the former Government selling or leasing assets is completely irrelevant to the motion being debated. I ask you to draw the member back to the leave of the motion.

TEMPORARY SPEAKER (Mr Clayton Barr): I thank the member for the point of order. At this stage debate on the motion is pretty broad ranging, so I will allow the member to continue.

Mr GREG WARREN: Under the previous Government, three motor registries were closed in my electorate of Campbelltown—in Narellan, Campbelltown and Ingleburn—with just one opened in Gregory Hills in the neighbouring electorate of Camden. I take nothing away from the people of Gregory Hills. Good on them. They needed and deserved it, because it is a growing area, but Labor members do not believe in robbing Peter to pay Paul. We believe in equitable investment, but that did not happen under the previous Government. For instance, a car park at Campbelltown Hospital, built with taxpayers' money, was handed over to the private sector for it to profit from.

Patients, carers and staff are locked into paying to park at a car park at Campbelltown Hospital for the profits of the private sector. We cannot escape the past, but we can reflect upon it to learn how not to make mistakes in the future. That is why we on this side of the House move legislation so that mob over there, when they do get back in, cannot sell everything off. Because we know that they know the cost of everything, yet the value of nothing, particularly in Western Sydney and south‑western Sydney. I thank the House.
