Mr GREG WARREN (Campbelltown)—Happy Birthday Campbelltown Public School. The school recently celebrated its 150th birthday. As the first school to be opened in the Campbelltown area, the initial enrolments sat at 89 students before rising to 129 students by the end of their first year. Initial subjects taught included English, arithmetic, geometry, history, geography and sewing for the girls alongside a weekly scripture from the clergy of various local churches. Patrick Newman, the headmaster insisted on students being taught the identification of various snakes in the local area and how to treat snakebites if they occurred. Something that was a very practical lesson in those early days. Amusingly, children at the school were only allowed to use one end of the playground as the other end was occupied by the headmaster's own livestock. A lot may have changed in the 150 years since the foundation of the school, but one thing that hasn't changed is the sense of family and community that surrounds the school. A great indication of this was the crowd who attended the school's official 150th birthday celebrations, from ex-students, to community members and current school parents, the support was exceptional. Happy Birthday again Campbelltown Public School.
